JOE ROGAN: NUTRITIONAL GURU?
Joe Rogan caused quite the stir last week when he released an IG post on a controversial food pyramid. He showed a graph which looked to claim that Lucky Charms, chocolate-covered almonds and cheerios were healthier than beef (yes wtf).
Let’s delve into this a little more and see what’s really going on.
The original study out of Tufts University (USA) was conducted to create a Food Compass Score (FCS). This is a nutrient profiling system that allocates a score to foods using an algorithm. The algorithm assessed the following domains of a food: Nutrient ratios, vitamins, minerals, food-based ingredients, additives, processing, specific lipids, fibre, protein and phytochemicals.
An FCS of 0 is the least healthy whilst 100 is the mot healthy. They then categorise the scoring system further into:
30 or less: foods that should be minimally ingested
31-69: foods that should be consumed in moderation
70 or more: foods that should be actively enouraged
Unlike the chart Joe Rogan posted, foods were ranked within their own specific category for comparison. Not against every other food analysed.
The authors themselves wrote that the results of the study don’t allow cross-comparison between food groups. Which is rather confusing as the same algorithm was used for each food domain, so why can’t the different food groups be compared? Plus they themselves created an alternative graph comparing different domains as shown below.
It certainly creates a more accurate scoring system than those conventionally used by Governments and agencies for public health policies. However it’s actual usefulness is still a little bit murky.
