Ever noticed what superstar footballers Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez sip on before a game? Chances are you have noticed Yerba Mate, a popular beverage in Latin America hailed for its ability to boost energy.
This weeks episode of the blog focusses on the history of the caffeine containing Yerba plant, its health benefits and how you can replace your daily coffee intake with a cleaner form of energy!
Summary
Yerba Mate is a herb derived from a species of tree native to South America and is the national drink of Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay. The Yerba is steeped in hot water to produce a caffeinated beverage similar to tea.
Yerba Mate can increase fat burning by 24% if drank before exercise.
Yerba mate contains approximately 71.8mg of caffeine in 200ml of the brew. For comparison a cappuccino coffee contains 86mg. Caffeine is well known for improving alertness, eliminating fatigue and may improve short term memory and reaction times.
Regular consumers of Yerba Mate admit the brew gives them energy without the nervousness which sometimes can occur after the consumption of coffee.
Reflections
I participated in a Yerba Mate circle, sat on Lopes Mendes beach in Ihla Grande, just outside of Rio de Janeiro. The mate circle is a unique custom and an enlightening experience. Even as a stranger I felt comfortable to share jokes, stories or lifestyle advice. I encourage any traveller in South America to embrace this aspect of culture! Yerba Mate is an acquired taste and some people prefer to add sugar or honey to the Yerba to make Mate Dulce (sweet mate).
Me on Lopes Mendes Beach, Ihla Grande, Rio de Janeiro 🇧🇷
Mate culture is booming all over the world and rightly so. With every sip of the dark green leaves, I am taken right back to Lopes Mendes. With such great health benefits and a spiritual ritual to preparing the Yerba, I challenge you to adopt this most special aspect of South American culture to your wellness regime.
