Our Wellness Wave Trends of 2023: Drinking on your own terms, functional fitness, SeaPlants, and Skychology π―
As we enter 2023, the focus on health and well-being has never been stronger. Consumers are becoming increasingly savvy in their approach to wellness, seeking out practices and products that are both effective and sustainable.
In this blog post, we'll explore the top wellness trends that are set to shape the industry in the coming year. From drinking on your own terms to functional fitness, sea plants and skychology, we'll delve into the ways in which consumers are looking to integrate wellness into their daily lives in new and exciting ways.
Raise Your Glass to Mindful Drinking π₯
Gen-Z is leading the charge in a new trend of mindful drinking and sober-curious lifestyles, with 26% of the generation choosing to not drink at all, according to a study by charity Drinkaware in the UK.
Mindful drinking is all about actively questioning your relationship with alcohol, without judgment. By being more aware of how alcohol affects your mind and body, you can create a healthier relationship with alcohol that is grounded in the present.
Sober-Curiosity is a natural extension of mindful drinking. It's about questioning when, how much, and why we drink, and breaking free from societal expectations of alcohol consumption. It's about taking a proactive approach to monitoring and adapting your relationship with alcohol.
You don't have to give up alcohol entirely to embrace mindful drinking.
This trend is all about finding balance and making conscious choices. Delicious mocktails, lighter spritzers, and low-alcohol drinks are more popular than ever, making it easy to enjoy a tasty drink without feeling left out.
Functional Fundamental Fitness πΆπ»ββοΈποΈββοΈ
Fitfluencers and desk workers alike are finally acknowledging functional fitness & mobility as an essential ingredient of a well-rounded routine, right up there with strength training, cardio, and flexibility.
Our lives have grown more stationary and our bodies more stiff, so mobility training offers the kind of gentle relief our achy joints crave.Β Β Here are some examples of functional fitness to incorporate into your fitness regimes in 2023.
CrossFit: A high-intensity, constantly varied program that combines strength training, cardio, and gymnastics. It focuses on functional movements such as squats, deadlifts, and Olympic lifts.
Functional Range Conditioning (FRC): A program that focuses on improving mobility and flexibility through a combination of joint-specific exercises, soft tissue work, and movement-based drills.
Calisthenics: A bodyweight-based program that focuses on functional movements such as push-ups, squats, and pull-ups to build strength, endurance, and flexibility.
Yoga & Pilates: A program that focuses on controlled, precise movements to improve core strength, flexibility, and balance. Incoroporate movement, breath, and meditation to improve flexibility, balance, and overall well-being.
Dive into Sea Plants ππΏ
Many of 2023's superfoods will come from the ocean, and searches for terms like green algae, seaweed snack recipes, nori recipes and salmon bowls are on the rise. Kelp, wakame, nori, and spirulina are all types of sea plants that you may have heard of. These sea veggies are packed with minerals, vitamins, phytochemicals, and antioxidants that help protect cells against free radicals and inflammation.
How can you make an effort to incorporate more sea plants into your diet?
Here are a few suggestions:
Experiment with different types of seaweed and algae. Kelp, wakame, and nori are popular choices that can be found in many Asian markets and health food stores.
Add seaweed to your soups and salads. It's a great way to add flavor and nutrition to your meals.
Try making your own seaweed snacks. Simply roast or dehydrate seaweed and add some salt or spices for a delicious, healthy snack.
Incorporate seaweed into your sushi. Nori sheets are commonly used to roll sushi, providing a tasty and nutritious option.
Try spirulina powder as a supplement. This blue-green algae is a great source of protein, vitamins, and minerals, and can be added to smoothies or mixed into other foods.
Eating sea plants is not only a delicious way to add more nutrition to your diet, but it's also a sustainable and environmentally friendly choice.
βοΈ Caution should be heeded for high thyroid disorder with marine plants.
Skychology: The future of wellbeing is looking up π€
Looking up at the sky is an effective, everyday wellbeing activity, with the potential to positively impact lives all across the world.
Skychology focuses on understanding how interactions with the sky can enhance our overall wellbeing. Successful Humans invited four participants to share their experiences of looking up at the sky during in-depth, semi-structured interviews.
The research showed looking up at the sky:
1. Is immediately calming.
2. Contributes to the experience of wellbeing.
3. Appears to be a effective form of emotional self-regulation.
4. Appears to enhance mindfulness, experienced as feeling a greater sense of clarity & perspective.
5. Promotes a greater sense of connectedness and feeling part of something bigger than ourselves.
6. Appears to be an everyday window to the experience of "awe" - a complex emotion positively associated with humility, creativity, social behaviour, reduced inflammatory response and enhanced immune system health.
7. Appears to negate the effects of "hedonic adaptation". Positive activities lose effectiveness over time, as we become used to them. However looking at the sky, it seems, never gets old - suggesting we can experience its wellbeing benefits at any time, throughout our lives.
